Your water tank is the most important asset of your house, but it’s often overlooked and hidden away despite its importance. It might have some moss or debris covering it or might have some discoloration that could be scrubbed off with some elbow grease. But does it have white streaks on it and have you ever wondered what the white streaks are that appear on your tank? Wonder no more as we are here to answer that question!
While many people claim this is the tank “self-healing” and to leave it be, this is as effective as putting a bandaid on a broken bone. The reason? The calcification indicates that these are full-thickness cracks, usually following the steel supports in the tank structure. We spoke to Lauchlan McConnel from the H20 Tank Doctor here on Mount Tamborine who said: “Water then is finding its way through the cracks and is coming in contact with the steel reinforcement mesh encased in the concrete, this then starts to rust and degrades its structural strength, eventually causing the structure to fail.” He continued to say: “Think of it like a small crack in the windscreen of your car, in most cases if you get that small crack repaired then you’ll not need to replace the windscreen, leave it and the chances are the crack shall get worse.”
An ounce of prevention certainly beats a tonne of cure, so I encourage our readers to look at the exterior of your tank every once in a while to make sure it stays in top condition, and if you see white streaks, remember that while calcium is great for your bones, it’s not so so great for your water tank.
